How to turn Pop-Up flash off on the D40?

So I have a removable flash for my d40, but every time that I try taking photos that need flash the pop-up flash comes up. Is there any way I can turn pop-up flash off that still allows me to use the removable flash?

I have a D60... but close enough....

You must shoot in P mode or higher (A, S, or M) for the flash not to pop up... if your used to shooting auto... then shoot in P... it's the closet to what your looking for..

also... your hotshoe flash has to be turned on... if it's a third party flash the Nikon might no recognize it ... but I am not sure of this...
