I picked up a Strobist kit for my 550ex. What a difference the lighting makes!

Flash makes a big difference in shots like these. Nicely done! I am not really fond of the dark shadows you produced with your light placement... but for a single light shot, not bad.

Yes, decent umbrella lighting makes a HUGE difference.

I have started using an umbrella as my first lighting setup and then i slowly stopped used them for more expensive strobes with power packs with softbox and beauty dish. a couple weeks ago i was shooting in a weird spot and decided to use the good old umbrella and a couple vivitar and i really liked the result. never under estimate the versatility and the quality of a 50$ umbrella. if used right of course.
