Yes it is smoke and yes it is inverted with changes in hue in layers.

SETUP: a stick of insense, black backdrop, fill light...Turn off all lights except for fill light - place it either to the side or behind smoke from insense. I tried several different settings, but liked 1/125 f/5.6 the best.
I then took it into photoshop and inverted the image, which turned the background white and brought out the smoke nicely. I duplicated the layer and changed the hue in the layer, made a layer mask and brushed out what i did not want that color. I then merged layers, made another duplicate layer, changed the hue again, made a layer mask, and brushed out the background to make it white again and brushed over what I colored in the first one to bring that color back.
