And of course I got them for my fish!

Black Phantom Tetra by f_one_eight, on Flickr

I used the 85mm 1.8G, a 20mm extension tube, lit by 2 SB600's above and 1 SB700 on the left.

Cheers!

Nice!

Did you need 3 speedlights to get the effect? Just curious.

Yeah, with the loss of light from the tubes and the fish being very active I needed all the light so I could shoot at 1/250th and f9 or around there. Shooting in aquariums is tough, and my homemade diffuser may be losing more light than I intend. Haha.

Did you get them with auto focus and image stabilizer contacts built in?
Saw a set on amazon for 50 bucks with EF, AF and IS support.

Yeah I got the Vello set ($80) from amazon. AF and OS seemed to work just fine. This shot was with AF.

If only they were that talented... Today I added 2 Angels, a Black Ghost Knife, and 4 striped kuhli loaches. Hopefully I'll be able to photograph them soon! They just need to get used to my tank and such.

Toss an AW-1 into the tank and see what develops.

They're getting worse... I think both of you need an intervention...

The funny part about 480sparky's suggestion about tossing an AW-1 in to the tank is that the AW-1 is barely in stock a lot of places!!! Thom Hogan's Nikon site has been complaining about how Nikon's country-specific method of allocating stock has meant that AW-1s are realllly tough to find in-stock in much of the USA. I thought that for an early effort with all-new everything (aquarium, tubes, lighting set-up) your first effort turned out pretty well. NEXT UP though, I would love to see some slow speed panning shots + rear-curtain flash synch, with a bit of shutter-dragging! It looks beautiful! I remember seeing some images done that way like 10 years ago, and they were gorgeous!!!

Basically, sloooow speeds, 1/6 to 1/3, panning with the fish, with a mix of continuous lighting AND flash. Saw them on dPreview, I think it was, many moons back.
