I know this question is old BUT...

Taking portrait of newborns and babies, any DSLR should work. If you know how, even a point and shoot can do a good job.
I will recommend go out and take a look at what is available in the market and see them in person.
Check out the Canon, Nikon, Sony, Pentax as well as others with Canon and Nikon still the market leaders.

According to recent news from Blomberg:
"In the market for cameras with interchangeable lens, or single lens reflex cameras, Canon controlled 44.5 percent of the market, followed by Nikon with 29.8 percent and Sony with 11.9 percent, according to the data."


Once you pick your camera, learn it with your kit lens. Once you know enough, you should be able to figure out what to get next in terms of lens or lighting gears. If you know how to capture the moment and use of light, even kit lens can do a decent job.
