Hasselblad in recent years has been owned by Hermes, the French scarf and leather goods maker, as well as a Swedish tractor and heavy-equipment manufacturer. The company that Victor Hasselblad himself founded,built, and ran is nothing mote than a brand name these days. The "Hasselblad" X-Pan 35mm panoramic camera???? MADE BY FUJIFILM!!! The Hasselblad digital medium format lenses??? FUJINONS. Not that there's anything wrong with cameras made by Fuji...or with lenses made by Fuji...

It simply seems like a pathetic money grab to take a SONY NEX camera, and slap on a wooden grip and a nameplate and jack the price up $5,000...I mean....man, that's for suckers. Rich ones, admittedly, but suckers none the less.

On the official Hasselblad web site, the Technical Specifications Chart fails to mention the lens focal length range, of the sensor size, or even the megapixel count of the sensor...amazingly inept marketing...

What's kinda' stupid too, is the way they show photos of the wooden grips being dinked around with by "artisans" and "craftsmen", but in their 3:03 video, they show the grips being milled by automatic C&C milling machines...jeebus...let's learn how to market!!! Hand-crafted wooden pistol grips, or hand-crafted wooden handles of any kind are one thing--and are understood in fine woodworking and gunsmithing circles to be HAND-crafted....and yes, Hassy (whoever that company 'is' these days), is showing MACHINE-cut, puked-out-in-45-seconds C&C milled grips being made! MAJOR DISCONNECT of the worst kind!!!!!! This is supposed to be a "luxury" product...this is supposed to be a "custom camera". Like a fine custom rifle, the kind of customer who will want this camera does not want to see mass-produced grips being cranked out by a machine...their marketing video is inept.

Christopher....if you want a fancy camera...look at the new stripped-down Leica digital, the "Typ 220" (sic, Typ 220) model just announced at Photokina....it's only like $5,450 or something like that...5.5 k, so that's like 1k lower than the SONY NEX/Hasselblad Lunar, AND the new Leica M's have live view AND focus peaking!!! Seriously....LEICA is the big news today at Photokina!!!! Their new Digital M models, two of 'em, will be the ultimate spring fashion accessories in Monaco and in Paris and London in 2013!! Fer sure!

Typ 220 doesn't have live view. Its a continuation of the M9 essentially... CCD sensor. The newer M Typ 240, has live view and bunch of technology blended in.... CMOS sensor

Leica has a forum that is closely moderated (Andreas chimes in on occasion). They have been doing a good job closely looking for feedback for direction. Among many other things..this resulted in a release of the M9 with a FF sensor rather than focusing on UWA focal length lenses to cater to the crop sensor. From my observations, three groups in particular have been "yelling" quite loudly over the years.

* The forward looking Leica shooters (like me) that want more forward looking designs and technology to integrate into the current M. Not just blindly plastering feature so they can mark checkboxes on the feature list... but intelligent melding of old and new.

* The long time but loyal R-system guys that felt left out of all the fun... when the DMR was discontinued with no upgrade path.

* The more conservative Leica shooters (ok... I often refer to them as Luddites) that still believe the perfect camera was invented back in the 50's in the form of the M3. They want nothing else than to stay as close to the original formula but with a digital sensor

The M Typ 240 is for the first two groups... The M typ 220 is aimed at the later. Depending on how both of the these cameras work, we'll have to see which direction Leica takes the system. One thing this also means..... that Leica is renewing their interest in telephoto lenses. A severe limitation of the rangefinder system.

One thing to note that is VERY important..... The M Typ 240 with all its new features is the same price as the current M9 with the M tip 220 being actually cheaper. In this day an age when premium products keep climbing in price very quickly..... this is an amazing accomplishment. Its clear that Leica is looking to expanding their base rather than cater to the existing.

* even though it does away with an appendage (mirrorbox + prism) that is a throw back decades ago
* even though it is a design that existed and successful many decades prior to the first SLR
* even though it impacts the packaging and design of optics to deal with the especially long film to flange distance
* even though mirror'd cameras have been "band-aiding" the design to deal with the inertia of the mirror... especially in MF.

just because you feel like being close minded... (yet open to a Hassy NEX.)

Older guys used to laugh at similar experiments when cameras decades older were already passing that test.....



Never said you had to buy into the notion of mirror less but your disdain for the idea is misplaced.
