My awesome mentor who took me under her wing a few years ago, gave me the privilege of shooting some photos of her today with her D700. Thought I'd show you one of my favorites.

She needs some fill on her face- flash or reflector.

Flash definitely went off, would I need a reflector then?

yeah i can see that the face is lit almost properly but the highlights behind her are so intense that it's hard to tell.

try moving the subject a little away from the window. also try playing around with underexposing and varying flash output. and maybe shift the camera to the lft a tad.

But what if I was going for the window shot? Is there a way to balance the light from outside onto the subject?

Lighing in these kind of situations is very tricky and you can EASILY exceed digital's ability to capture the entire range. Sometimes it is better to wait until the light is softer to do portraits like this. And unlike film, areas over two stops overexposed, when the tetail is gone it is TRULY gone. The highlights on her white sweater are completely blown out. It is a delicate balancing act. You should expose for the highlights (here her sweater) and then balance light, either with a reflector (the cheapest route) or off camera fill flash.

Very soft and lovely. Maybe a little less shadows on the right side of her face with some fill light but other than that, attractive! Where and how did you get someone to take you under her wing? ....any advice?

minus the highlights and the fill on her face, I think this is a great photo. I love her expression
