You can buy the best camera on the market (if you can figure out what it is) and every lens that Nikon or Canon makes. You can buy every bell, whistle, doo-dad, and trinket that B&H and Adorama sell. The only difference between that and now is that you'll have a lot less money and a sore back from hauling all of it around. You won't be able to take better photographs because the two things that makes one photographer better than the next are free. Those are Knowledge and Experience.

This is true. If you think that your pictures will automatically get better with new gear, then clearly the blame for bad pictures is being misplaced.

On the other hand, you can also gain enough knowledge and experience to have established what kinds of pictures you like to take and you've realized the limitations of your current gear. Maybe different cameras or doo-dads will be more suited to your shooting style. Maybe you'd like to expand to different sorts of pictures that your cameras aren't very good at. Or, it's an accessory that will help you make more use of your current gear. If I, for example, decide I'd really like to focus on landscape, I'll understand that some of my cameras will be better at that sort of picture than other cameras. I might also invest in a different lens that will capture landscapes better, or some new filters for my current lenses.

But I agree - I've never understood lusting over gear for its own sake. Not saying that goodguy is guilty of this, just that I don't understand it in general.

I'd take a 800 f5.6 VR, sell it and buy a used: 200 f2 VR1, 500 f4 VR, 85 f1.4, and 24 f1.4, some accessories, and have a few thousand extra to pocket...

Ok first let me confess I LOVE buying stuff and in a way I am hooked on it since I started collecting fountain pens years ago, from that I moved to watches, medals, old paper money and in a very limited way photography.
Dont get me wrong I am absolutely NOT into photography for the gear, I am into it because I love it, I love taking pictures, I love going on trips with my family and friends and looking around for the next picture, I walk around even without a camera and thinking to myself "now that would make a gorgeous picture".
Saying that yes I get a kick out of new gear but I also am learning a lot when I get new gear, about the limitation of my current gear and my own limitation, as an example I see my 50mm 1.8G is not the sharpest tool I have, I thought it was a problem with my old camera but now with my new camera I see its still not all that impressive, I see I can get interesting results with it even though its not up to my expectation, I experiment with new gear, keep what I like and sell what I don't..................but most importantly I collect knowledge a long the way which really for me is the most important thing.

PS-just to add about carrying stuff and having a soar back, I know all about that!
Disk herniation in lower back, went through hell and back with pain I don't wish to my worst enemy, life looses its colours and just turn to shadows of gray and black with constant pain.
Thank god I am much better now and is very very careful what I carry and how I handle myself.
