Just set it like Ken Rockwell says... auto ISO almost all the time. Just set a "high" limit.

I always set my ISO by hand, so this would never happen to me.

however, I took 20 shots without any CF card in the camera not too long ago

For ISO 3200, that's really good quality. I never knew the D80 was so good. However, it would certainly be worth trying those pics again, because no application is perfect in reducing noise. Best of luck!

For ISO 3200, that's really good quality.

But at the given pixel resolution you cannot really judge the noise anyway. what you see here is what resulted from the noise after re-sizing the image. so it all depends on the re-sizing algorithm used.
