Can't win if it isn't a race! Well, not ones with tilted horizens that I think add to the photo. But really, it's because of the me posting in both the "cute kids" and "kid of tpf" threads at the same time. I should have chosen one.

But if you check out my started threads in my profile I don't have too many posts of the lil guy recently.

I am a *****. I've had that status my entire life even when I was little due to sexist remarks and don't mind it a bit. You should see me in action at work. If I were a guy I'd be a hero.. so I just substitute.

Then they should not be tilted, but have distortion. Buy a fisheye... Kidding aside, I don't mind tilts as long as it adds to the photo.

Can you explain how the tilt adds to that photo?

I feel without the tilt it loses the feeling of mischievousness. Although I wish he was looking directly at the camera, a level horizon brings his gaze at a lower level. I prefer straight horizons, but in this one it just didn't work for me.

Does it not give a feeling of mischief? If it doesn't, I will not use this photo as a reference to tilted horizons again. I'm just an amateur. I could be way off in my thinking and looking like an ass right now!

The thing is, we don't see the horizon as tilted, nor do we see it as an arc. We see it as a level line (assuming sea on sky). Even if our head is tilted slightly, the brain compensates and feeds us a correct image. It does not do this when we look at photos for some reason, probably because the photo is relatively small compared to the view that we have. I bet if you blew up a huge photo of a scene that included the horizon and stood close enough to it that you couldn't see anything else including the edges of the frame, it would appear level (assuming it was off only a few degrees), but when I see a photo 800x600, an unlevel horizon or "unvertical verticals" is the first thing I see. If that's the purpose, then that's fine. It can certainly be used as a compositional element, but it's usually not intended as such and is an accident, showing less than 100% effort at the time of shooting or in post. Just my opinion anyway.

A horizon is ......... well, horizontal, which is opposite of vertical. So do you refuse to adjust tilted verticals as well?

...so, from now on, if i post a picture, and someone says its not level, i will remind them that its not natural to be level.


and then, my pictures won't be wrong. they will be right. or at least geographically correct.

Possibly, but you'll also give off the impression of being too lazy to take two clicks of the mouse to straighten it out for visual appeal.
