Importing Images

I use iphoto to import my pictures and i just went to mexico and have sooo many pictures and when I upload them they take like 5 sec each to import. What's up with that? is that normal? is it because of my computer is too slow? I don't know whats up. Someone please help. Also, if you want, can you recommend another program for storing/editing/importing, etc. pictures if iphoto isnt good enough?
