I have shopped prices for telephoto zooms quite a while now, and never really considered Nikon's 70-300mm VR lens mostly because I didn't think such an inexpensive lens could produce pleasing results. Well I heard Moose Peterson call it Nikon's best kept secret, so for just a little pocket change (relative to pro glass) I decided to get one and give it a shot. I gotta say, I'm pretty impressed so far. Today was my first day shooting with it. All my experience up to this point has been wide angle (18-35mm) so composing with this lens was actually quite challenging.

I had the lens, it was good. Anything over 250mm started getting pretty soft though. It's an incredible value. Nice and light too. VR worked great.

I like especially the range: 70-200mm. The field-of-view, clarity and the ease with which backgrounds can be defocussed.
