Innocence (Pls C&C)

My friend asked me to get some shots of her little one for printing purposes, this was one of my favorites.

- overblown highlights all over the place.
- maybe different crop.
- child's face is underexposed. there is always a problem when shooting someone with the cap.
I would say that you need to change the place of shooting. No shooting in a bright daylight, find some shade and place the child there. For someone with the cap you'll need a reflector to bring back the light on the face, or change the position of the child's head in that way so light would fall on the face and eyes.

With this said, all parents will be glad to have any photo of their child. They wouldn't probably notice all imperfection, all they care is the child's face and this cute expression

-Yes the overblown highlights may have been done by me in my RAW editor, I will have to check the RAW when I get home.
-This image was not cropped at all. What you see is as shot in terms of that.
-I had not even noticed that the face was under exposed at all.

I will check the RAW, perhaps a better processing is needed on this.

You couldn't do this overblown highlights in post. Look at her cap. You may have enhanced them but not create them in post.
With the different crop I was thinking that maybe this photo would benefit from a different crop. To hide lady's hand f.e.

But, this is only my opinion, someone else will maybe disagree

The harsh rim light really accentuates stray hairs and such around the child's face, which doesn't work well with the under exposure. There also appears to be a forearm in the background to the right which draws the eye.

I might also suggest getting down on the child's level when photographing them.

I like your shot, and after seeing it I will certainly have to do this. I am going to visit my neices this weekend so I may end up with some shots I am willing to share from that and your advice is probably going to make a world of difference in shooting them.

Along with the crop to remove the arm from the right hand side, would you guys feel this would be better as a B&W?

I'd think the blue and green would be about the same tone of gray so I don't know if it would work well in B&W or not. I think as mentioned there would need to be some adjustments made because of the bright sunlight she was in yet with the cap shading her. It might be better to know how to work with the light and get proper exposures consistently before doing pictures for other people even though someone might appreciate a nice picture of their child.

I don't think I'd be in quite so tight, but keep an eye on backgrounds and how you're framing shots. I like the idea of her in the hat looking up at you, that could work as well as being at the kids' level I think, it's a matter of moving around and getting a good vantage point.

Thank you for posting this edit. Yeah, it didn't fix it, though the crop definately does look better. Its a shame, that expression is what I am going to regret losing.
