Hey all! I've been reading this board for a few months now and I just recently bought myself a camera so I'd thought I'd atleast say hi! I've been loving my new Pentax K100d Super (with the kit lens) but I do have one question that I'm sure someone here could probably answer. The kit lens is a f3.5-5.6 15-55mm, but when i use the aperture priority mode, it allows me to go up to Av38 or other rediculously small apertures. What's going on here? Am I confusing one thing with another, someone please straighten me out. thanks a bunch!!

The aperture varies from f3.5 to f22 at 18mm and from f5.6 to f38 at 55mm. Only maximum apertures are usually given on the lens. That's what the f3.5-.6 means; maximum aperture of f3.5 at 18mm and maximum aperture of f5.6 at 55mm.

great, that makes perfect sense. You guys can tell i'm new at this! thanks for the answer steph.
