When I take pictures of my kids with a window behind me it helps with my lighting, but then I get the window and/or my sillohette in their eyes...

It's better, also, to have the window off to a side instead of directly in front of or behind them or you.

I thought I may end up with more shadow on one side? I can try it though, Thank you.

You can also use a white reflector, 5 in 1 are easily available on ebay and many photographic shops in various sizes or you can make your own out of something simply white and reflective. This can be used to reflect light from the window back onto the more shadowed side of your subject - not really so as to remove the shadowing totally, but to ensure that you don't end up with terribly harsh shadows where detail is lost

Nice big catchlights...that's also something that the pros go for.
