Is the more expensive the best option?

I currently have a Nikon D3300 and I like my camera, but I'm looking into upgrading after the first of the year, but I take months to really research a product that can be quite the investment to make sure I get what I want and that I'll be happy with it.

I was originally leaning towards a Nikon D810 but i keep seeing the D5300 popping up and just can't see much of a difference between the 3300 and 5300 yet people rave of the upgrade between those two.

The 5300 is much cheaper than the 810.. is it worth it to spend the extra almost $1000 for the 810?

You just gotta ask yourself what the 810 has that your 3300 or a 5300 doesn't that you need, or really really really really really want.

Spending more money doesn't get you anything except broke.

Well the d810 is a full frame sensor, so yes there is a huge difference between it and the d3300 and d5300 models.

A lot depends on what you shoot most often of course. I upgraded to full frame and I love it, but then I also shoot a lot indoors without a flash so for me it was worth every penny.

You can also look at getting a used d600 or d610, I picked up a d600 that had recently had the shutter replaced for a little over $800 not to long ago.

If your shooting more telephoto then sticking with an aps-c sensor might make more sense, but if I were you I wouldn't be looking at the d5xxx models but rather a d7100 or d7200. Those would both be a pretty significant upgrade from what you have. The 2nd control wheel alone is worth it

I just keep questioning of the MP upgrade alone is worth it, especially considering my photography business is up and moving now and although my clients have all been happy with what I've taken so far, I keep asking myself it they might be happier with the picture quality from the 810.

I hadn't even looked at the 7100 or 7200. I do portraits and weddings. I might also look into the 600. I recently did a shoot indoors and it came out pretty bad, my ISO was to high.

Honestly the higher mp is nice when your cropping photos but in portrait work sometimes higher mp can be a double edged sword.

Well I'd say yes but caveat that with but you meed to know how to use it. The D810 has more advanced features than the D5300 and is full frame. It's those little differences that can make a big deal but it's the usual mantra of if you don't already know why its better you probably don't need it. Honestly if you are only a year into photography you'd probbably be better spending money on good glass and time on improving your technique. Upgrade the body when you are looking for something spesific that your current body just can't do

Here's a suggestion: Instead of trading up from the 3300 to the 810, why not ADD the 810 to your gear list?

Then full frame might be a good upgrade to consider. I love my D600

Invest in some decent lighting instead of relying on ambient light.
Using one or several flash units and light modifiers gives you a lot more control of the quality of your work.

Yep... this. Exactly. If you're a portrait photographer, you should have at least as much invested in lighting gear as in cameras/lenses!

Recommend going to FF.
I have a d600 and D750. I think the AF sensor on the d750 is better for wedding scenario than the D600.

I just got the D750 and learning the differences between the two has driven me kinda nuts in a way from some of the things I photograph. And the way the AF works had me do a bunch of testing. Don't get me wrong, the D600 is a great camera.

You may not understand the low light sensitivity advantage you'll have with a FF sensor until you compare it to a DX camera. That's when I really learned the difference, even with the same lens.

Also keep in mind. If you only had DX lenses, then you'll have to buy appropriate FullFrame lenses to go with a new camera.
