What's new

Is there really a difference between Canon and Nikon (regarding price)?

Mav, yet again, you are totally correct 100% super. Well done.

I've been doing a lot of research. It looks like the bodies of each run about the same price as far as getting what you pay for. I've noticed when both Canon and Nikon have a lens that's basically the same, the Canon one is usually slightly less expensive, but the flashes for Canons run more than the Nikons.

Anyway, this is probably a lot of comparison for nothing, but I don't have anything else better to do anyway. Would all of you people say that for comparing them as much as possible, that Canon and Nikon are pretty much neck and neck as far as price/what you get?

Thanks for phrasing your research like the same old tired question so everybody would get in an argument.

:er:

Mav grows on you.
Heheh, yeah he does. We're just on exactly the same wavelengths. I want to rip out his brain and put it in my skull.

On a completely different note, do you know Mav's address?

Canon doesn't really have anything like the 40d's and 60d's. They're "stripped down" cameras to get new DSLR purchasers into a system for cheap, where as Canon has the XTI which almost competes with the d80. The 40D kind of competes with the d80 and the d300. The 5D, and if they ever replace it with the MKII, doesn't really match up with the d300. FF vs. Crop isn't really a valid comparison...and the fact that the retail on the 5D was originally something like $3000.

???

I'm assuming you meant to say "Nikon" doesn't really have anything like the 40Ds...but then that wouldn't make sense either because Canon doesn't have a 60D....can you explain?

I guess he meant: 'Canon does not really have anything like the Nikon D40 and D60...'

Nikon: D40, D40x, D60, D80, D200, D300
Canon: XT, XTi, XS (just announced), XSi, 30D, 40D

According to Canon USA's website, the XT, XTi, and 30D are still current cameras and presumably available for new purchase, so I'd say Canon and Nikon are about the same as far as number of offerings here.

You meant D40 and D60. I think this is what the new Canon "XS" is intended to compete with. BTW the "stripper" cameras are great IMHO. They just get rid of all of the garbage that you don't really need (like bracketing) and leave you only with the stuff you do need. Assuming it's cheap enough, I might pickup a Canon XS just to try out some Canon glass. All I need is a friggin body to record the images off of the LENS. I don't need any of the other crap on the body.

The XTI is not quite a D80.
The D80 is not quite a 40D.
The 40D is not quite a D300.
And the D300 is not quite a 5D.

Nikon and Canon intentionally do this. It's called market segmentation, and it helps both of them maintain their prices and profit margins. You generally want to avoid competing head-to-head with your competitors if you can avoid it because it ends up hurting both companies in the end. But Canon has been losing a lot of sales from Nikon's D40 lineup, and these are first time customers which are critical, because they'll keep buying more stuff from whatever system they buy into assuming they don't switch. I think this is what the Canon XS is going to address, to help new customers find their way over to Canon rather than Nikon. I'll watch out for them at Costco!

dude, stay away from me.

Good thing you're in the UK.

And nothing's like a D3

Nikon wins

Just Kidding:lmao:

Canon 1Ds MkIII at full-frame and 21MP is still the champ, until the D3x comes out. I suspect these two flagship cameras will go head-to-head for marketing and bragging rights. Even the D3, and 1D MkIII cameras seem to be segmented a bit. The 1DIII doesn't have the insane high ISO capability of the D3, but it's a 1.3x and does have more reach which can be important for sports, which is its intended market.

on the flip side...

Look at the prints of Nikon and Canon of similar lens types. 99.9% of the viewers couldn't tell you the difference much less tell you which was taken with Nikon or Canon.

If you are comparing final prints, the comparison is pretty much spitting hairs at that point. Which leaves the core difference in the realm of the photographer's hands. Which camera feels better.. which is comfortable. That is purely a personal decision.

With that said... For the high end, I like Canon. For the low end, Canon is probably less value. IMO, Pentax is the best bang for the buck all around.... but that decision is only possible if the shooter doesn't care about the name/branding.

I've been trying to find cheaper Pentax lenses, and their kit lenses sell for more than Canon's do. And Nikon's for that matter. And then, the price of their 50mm... well, I like Pentax, but I'm not finding the bargains everyone speaks about. Perhaps you can enlighten me (please)?

And, I really tried to NOT make this the same-old debate. I never mentioned anything about quality, cause its impossible to measure. I was trying to base my question on price, something I felt I could get a more concrete answer to (thanks for the answers, BTW!). I'm sorry if I'm one of "those" posters because I posted this, though I did go back and see if another thread addressed my question (none of them addressed price alone).

I'm very surprised to see someone say they thought Nikon was higher quality and NOT get jumped on! But we'll save that for another thread... :)

Edited to add: I can find Pentaxes kit lenses for cheaper than Canon, but not Nikon. And it seems that their other lenses are a bit more?
