I tried to balance using natural light and just enough fill flash to deal with the shadows. How did I do ? I got a nice catch light but to me the face looks a little flat.

Thanks,

Mike

Was the flash on camera?

next time try OCF (off camera flash) with some sort of modifier on the shadow side

The AMOUNT of light looks good, but the flatness has to do with WHERE the light is relative to the camera.

^^This^^ Try to get the light source up and away from the camera.

Thanks guys. I only had a minute to grab the shot before my son had to head out to meet some friends, it was shot with flash on camera. I assume the flash should have been camera right ?

IMO, no it was not enough light.

Be that as it may it is also my opinion that the more pressing issue is the direct sunlight is way to harsh and needed to be diffused/scrimmed some.
