Your concept is good, but the execution needs work. Definitely shoot wider as you are losing the top of his hat.

This would go better with the title if you had the little boy leaning back, propped up against that box (I think that's what it is) or the wall, hat tilted low and looking beat from a hard days work. You could even have him carry the lantern while walking down some tracks and get some cool shots. You could add the candle light in post, as not to risk his safety. Oh, and listen for trains too lol.

THIS is significantly better!!!! Love the colors (which may be what contributes to the great depth) and the composition is wonderful. My only gripe is the angle... I'm kind of confused as to how the whole scene has everything in different angles (if that makes any sense)

The ground here is very uneven but I also have a huge problem with getting my shots straight :S I almost was the mark iii just to have that level in it! When I am shooting I never even notice it but when I get home and open them I start to see it. Anybody have any tips there?

Here I just switched the focus I think I got it a little more straight but seems a bit over exposed.

Exposure looks fine to me! The blown portion in the top right is overexposed, of course, but this is still a solid shot.

I stared at this a while trying to make sense of all the angles.. lol

to the op.. I think the lantern should be leveled.. and I prefer the first focus option.
