Or do you just mean to buy the 35 f/1.4 and get rid of or sell your kit lens? (Not actually trading lenses with someone.)

That 35mm f/1.4 is over 1400.00 brand new and kit lenses are usually less than 300. Sounds like a scam. Be careful

Actually not sure how much the canon 50 is.

The Canon 50 1.4 is probably around $400 now (maybe closer to $450). The 1.8 is usually right around $100, sometimes less.

Yes, but after a while you may wish that you had gotten the 1.4 version... It's a good start though. And, I'm pretty sure it's the cheapest prime lens you can buy (which could be good or bad, depending on your perspective.)
