Lake Huron Tonemapped?

I've shot the lake over and over and over and over again and I'm almost never happy with them, I was close enough on this one but it was still falling short for me so I tried a little enhancement with tonemapping. I think my biggest issue with it now is the sky around the seagull, I tried to bring out the detail as much as possible but...

If not, I'd go back and see about getting rid of that color cast. This is a poor quick attempt:

Before I read your writeup I thought the same thing with the sky around the seagull.
I also thought the rocks up front to the right kinda looked like a tuskless walrus. (fyi, my new glasses are in, I just have to go get them)

Honestly, PR, I like the b&w conversions. I see the purple cast on my monitor too, but it's not calibrated, so take it for what it's worth there.

Thanks all! Yeah the colour ... ugh... I think the edit lambert did is better but it's still not "there" yet, I may tinker a bit more with it.
As for black and white, yes I did go that way with it and I like it alright but again, not quite "there" but it IS closer than the colour version!.

PR, aren't you using LR? If so, have you downloaded the presets from Matt K. at killerlightroomtips.com? He has a B&W Tonal preset that I really like to use. It comes in light, medium and strong.

Ron, I have it but I don't use it, I am still using PS but thinking about tinkering with Lightroom and seeing if I like it or not. For my conversions I'm using Silver Effex.

PR, this is what that B&W Tonal Contrast (Strong) preset looks like. I like it because you still see the details in the darks.
