I'm very new to this so please be painfully honest with me...I want to learn as much as I can to improve.

Framing the shot with the backlit leaves is nice, however, the tree trunks smack dab in the middle of the frame not only ruin the composition, but they also ruin your attempt to incorporate the lake into the shot.

Thanks for the advice! I did get a lot of lake pics so I was trying something a little different...although I'm not sure it worked. The sun is right behind the tree trunk...peeking between where the trunk splits. If I had executed it a little better would the composition still be off?

Yes, I'm afraid the composition would still have been off as the two trees cut the photo into two equals halves, which doesn't work.
However, the colours and the atmosphere you experienced transpires, the colours came out nicely - only the composition ... ah well, with your idea of having the sun peaking through the two trunks, and where it was in the sky and where you were, it wouldn't have worked otherwise.
