I'm not sure what to think about this shot. I loved the fog and the dead trees when I originally took the shot, but in post-processing I had difficulty increasing the contrast of the trees to create the shot I had originally envisioned. Perhaps the fog was thicker in reality than in my mind's eye. Any comments or critiques would be appreciated.

Misty/foggy and contrasty are self-exclusionary. But I think you might get close to what you wanted by using a wide angle lens and shooting one tree very close to eliminate as much atmospheric blurring as possible and leaving the trees further back fogged. That should give you a contrasty subject amid a foggy background. Just a thought though.

It's nice the way it is. If you do want to darken the trees for a little more contrast, you could either select them and just lower the brightness, or check the rgb values in the trees and do a very selective curves adjustment. The latter might also darken the darker area of fog along the bottom, but if that didn't look good you could mask it out.

I think it's fine the way it is. If you dial up the contrast, I think you'd lose the "foggy" feel.

Fog and contrast is contradictory. It is hard to have both at the same time. I like what I see. For your image to up the contrast and retain the foggy look, you will need to select and process the trees separately from the fog/background and/or vice versa.
