Lens comparison site (and intervention needed)

While the 50mm is too long for many of my uses, if I'm doing a single portrait and I can frame it the way I want it at 50mm, I will pull out the 1.4 everytime. It is SHARP.... well worth the money imo. I think i got it used (can't tell it's been used) for $320 with a UV filter (which I don't use).

because the poor little lens hardly ever gets mentioned
I'd never even heard about it.

I honestly don't think Tokina have put much into its marketing - even a look around the net and the handful of reviews shows that its a pretty small user base; good side was it meant that when the lens shortages were happening it was about the only lens that they did have stock of (though only at the national dealer, the shops don't normally stock it).

I found a guy selling a nearly new 50mm 1.4, so I'll be picking it up after work today. :) Good timing!

35mm is really short for Macro. You'd have to be right on top of something to get 1:1, wouldn't you?

Pretty much, which makes lighting very difficult - certainly the choice to make it a true macro is somewhat curious, but its 1:2 magnification range is usable and I guess Tokina wanted to go further than 1:2 and felt that making it true 1:1 was the next best move both optically and marketing wise (instead of having it sit somewhere between 1:2 and 1:1). You can use it at 1:1, but you really want a still subject and lots of light thrown around since you can easily end up shadowing it.

Might be alright if you use it with a macro ring flash.

Indeed, though I've sadly no ringflash to try and experiment with (hmmm maybe I should get one ;)) though to be honest I should play around more with my twinflash and see was I can get out of it
