lens for D800

Ohh yeah man its a work of art. Its such a fun lens

I will eventually get the 24-70 as well. I have the 35-70 and I rarely miss having wider than 35.... Sometimes, but rarely. I would even settle for the 80-200 afs.

I just decided to go with the 24-120 f4 as a main zoom for my D800. I really looked at the rugged and tried 24-70 f2.8 but didn't need the speed and have used a few VR lenses before and liked them. The overall consensus is that the thing is good and sharp much more so that its predecessors with the variable stops. But since it hasn't yet arrived -- don't know - will see. I own the 105 AF VR and love it. Need a zoom for EDC. like I say will see.

thanks for the comments. I have ordered the 14-24, 24-70, 70-200 along with the D800. Now just waiting, waiting and waiting for the D800 to be shipped along with the glass.

You just dropped about 10000$ in one go? :drool:your a lucky man :D

I decided to test my D800.. with my 28-300. Here is a 100% crop at 300mm (Hand Held)

300mm (Nikon 28-300)
F5.6
1/800
ISO 400
Ambient light shot (No flash) on a cloudy, yucky day!

Only post is some mild sharpening.... click the bar to see the full sized image... comments welcome! I don't think it is bad at all for a 100% crop!

But only when you hold it up to take a shot. Otherwise it can just hang from a shoulder strap, or you can put it on a monopod using the lens tripod collar.

The Nikon AF-S 70-200 f/2.8 VR II only weighs 54.3 oz. Thats only 3.34 lbs.

;) If your physical condition is so poor that the weight of a 70-200 f/2.8 is an issue as you walk around, you likely have other more pressing problems. ;)

hey!:lol:I was just making a statement, and when you compare it to a person who walks around with a 50mm all the time, it is considered heavy if your not used to it.

If I had the "where-with-all" I'd get the 70-200 f2.8 AF VR for my second lens. Using the 24-120 f4 AF VR as my wide to moderate tele. I used to be a "nothing but tripod" person but am gradually being weened by the quality of the new Nikon Vibration Reduction lenses.

Well my 24-120 f/4 VR came and went. I tested it against my old 28-105, my 50mm 1.4 and my 105 VR macro and it flunked. Images were not sharp. That is to say sharp enough to be acceptable with a D800E. Would you believe the 28-105 even was sharper! The lens may have been a dud or not.
Sooo I sent her back and ordered the 24-70mm f/2.8. A little more weight here but pro glass throughout. I felt that I need a good mid-range lens to stay on the camera most of the time. I have wider and faster primes to use when needed. As well as the 105mm f/2.8 for those closeup moments.
I also found a old AF 70-210mm f4 for 300 bucks in pretty cherry shape, and picked that up. The price was right anyhow.

hmm....thats interesting, I don't have the 24-120 or 28-105, but I do have the 24-70 and its my main workhorse glass. I think you'll dig it. sounds like you've got a pretty nice collection coming along....how do you like that 70-210?

Thanks for the comeback. I am really looking forward to the lens.
As for the 70-210 f/4, I haven't had a chance to test it yet with the D800 I think it will be pretty good it is a solid hunk of metal and glass / old time Nikon AF lens. I will post here my findings when I get some results.

I love these threads for entertainment value, the OP has gone from considering a 28-300 VR superzoom to buying the trinity in one swoop without clearly understanding alot about photography if he was considering the 28-300 in the first place as a main lens!

I have preordered a Nikon D800 and tentatively plan on getting the Nikon 28-300 f/3.5-5.6G VRII lens and probably the 14-24 mm wide angle lens. Comments on these choices? Cost is not particularly a factor.
I have been testing lenses with my D800E and have returned both the 28-300 and the 24-120. I have come to the conclusion that this camera is different than all my others. It requires only the sharpest lenses firmly attached to a tripod and shot at f/8. I have been only using my primes with it so far.
I got the camera because of its posable stupendous resolution. Not a walk around and shoot. To take full advantage of the thing get only the best lenses -- I have now ordered the 24-70mm f/2.8 as my zoom. Will see how that does.

I got to play around with the 28-300 at the store and the focus is slooooow.

Depending on how often you'll be shooting wide with the 14-24, if it's often and wide open, then go for it, but if I were to spend 3k for 2 lenses, I would consider the 16-35 f4 at about 1k, then the Nikon 24-70.

Here's a sample taken last night with the 24-70 & D800e
