Lenses in general...

I will admit I am totally new at this and am in the process of looking for a newer camera to meet my needs. I want to be clear on what all the lenses aspects do so I am reading a ton. Especially the resources everyone provided in my previous thread.

What I'm curious about now is exactly what the lense descriptions mean so I can make an educated decision about what will meet my needs the best.
