Moving back into my realm, here's my contribution for today.

I like the scene Rick, but it feels a bit off-level to me. Not sure if it is or not, but visually, it "feels" like it is.

Thanks John, on the upper right corner is the county courthouse. I used that for my plumb line. I do see what I think you're referring to regarding the horizon? This is Reading. Nothing is level in Reading.
I'm certainly open minded for correction if someone see's something I missed though

I would have cropped a tiny bit more off the right to cut out the building. I find that it is competing with the cross in the foreground because they are level with each other. I'd like to see the cross as the 'tallest' (i.e. most prominent) structure in the view.

Other than that tiny little niggle, it's really nice.

Thanks Leonore. This is right down the road from me. I'm going back tomorrow for a retake. The one thing that bothers me it the cross lies right on the horizon and I like your idea of putting the courthouse out of the frame Hopefully I'll even have a better sky

I would wonder, if you will have enough sun (and space of course) to take this picture with a very, very long lens. The idea being the increase in size of the background which right now is very far away, packed with a lot of hard to read detail. I think changing the relative perspective will ad more dynamics to the picture and will work better for the title you chosen. It will be easier to find "life".

I like the courthouse. two cents life and death, you are looking at a line between the living side and the dead side. cross respresents the dead side a tall structure on the living size gives it balance to represent the living.

And I couldnt really tell much on the level difference between the first and second shot.
I cant tell if things are level sometimes anyway, too many variables, and then when I know my own stuff is level (camera level) someone will still claim its off so I usually avoid that discussion unless it is real obvious.

Good thought Timor! I think you're right. My problem is 2 fold. This cemetery is built onto the side of a hill. I'm on the edge of the cemetery. The hill becomes very steep where I standing, and, I'm also at the edge of the woods. Sun won't be a problem, but space will, and going up steeply will ruin the perspective as I'll be looking down on the cross.
I'm going to take my 135 along. I don't know if that will be long enough to help or if I'll even have enough room for that short tele.

This is a cool concept... though I'm not sure if you intended it.

My eyes start with the large tombstone arc to the left along the line of them, then curve out into the image and to the right and end with the building. As my eyes move, they go across an urban landscape. So from death to urban landscape and corporate structure. That's pretty powerful, IMO.

On this particular image, I would crop more of the sky to tighten it up and keep my viewer's eyes confined...



Also... I would reshoot.

I would try a few more angles and see how my eye flows. I'd actually like it to not be quite so tight on the corporate building, and I'd like to try a little more space between that and the large tombstone. Maybe move to the left and turn with the scene.

Also, the B/W correction seems pretty muddy. Not a lot of contrast, probably because you took this mid-day. Mid-day is the enemy of the photographer. Always remember that. Early morning and late day are always best.
