Light painting.

I went to a workshop yesterday evening where part of the time was doing some light painting. I had tried this with a flashlight but never have tried it with a flash. I think it turned out good. Motorcycles are a natural for this, but I'm going to have to get my Jeep out and give it a go on it one evening.

I've done it with flashlights but this was cool. They suggested using bulb mode and use a cloth to cover the front of the lens between flashes of the speed light/strobe/or flashlight spots to not get as much or any ghosting. That was something new for me but I like it. Of course you need multiple people there for this to work. We had probably 15 people there last night.

Not a bad shot, I feel the bike it still a little underexposed. Also what are all the blue and gold reflections not a fan. I would remove them by creating a layer PS and Desaturating.

Nicely done Ron! Are you familiar with the work of Harold Ross ? Along with his word press blog he also is on facebook and has a website. His light painting work is phenomenal! He does some landscape work, but most is still life. I love what he does with old tools and machinery.

Thank you. The blue is a gel over the flash fired at the wheels. The gold is possibly an orange ct gel as well. (They were trying different ones, as I sat there and took images.)

I am actually now wanting to do this with a hot rod or maybe a rat rod.

Ok I get it so you were not in full control of the lighting. I have never been to a group shot like this.

Nope, I was just manning my camera. I did get up and light painted with my flashlight on a couple of shots but I didn't get photos on my camera of this. (it was with a model behind the bike). It was a workshop with a local PPA chapter.

I've done the same thing quite a few times, but instead of a single exposure, I use multiple layers and exposures.

It was very enjoyable. We started at golden hour shooting models with OCF, they were dragging the shutter which was something I had not done on a portrait and got good results. Then we did some long exposure (1 second) portraits where we used a flash then a flashlight to expose them. That was cool.

Finally, we did this light painting with the motorcycle.

I am looking forward to going back to next months meeting, to learn more, even though it will be an indoor presentation.

More from this set.I cropped these differently than I have. I listened to a photographer at a conference talking about how cropping 1:1 and 16:9 were going to becoming more and more prevalent, so I have been playing with it some. I really like the look on these.

1) This is the first one we did with just a flash and no color gels. cropped at 16:9



2) This is the same image as the original with the 16:9 cropping.
