Lighting?

I don't have studio equipment yet (not sure if I'll take that plunge, since most of what I do is on-location), but I have been working on trying to set up a "mock studio" in my house. With this photo, I used a black cloth for backdrop (don't have to worry about shadows with the black), and just my canon 20d with 420ex speedlite (and as much natural light as possible). I actually think I used my 18-55 kit lens. Do you think the lighting works in this one? I'm trying to get better at getting images straight out of the camera...

Doesn't seem bad at all to me. It might be just a hair bright in the centre of his face, but I'm on a crappy, uncalibrated monitor at work, so take that with a grain of salt. The image seems soft however...

Thanks. It is a bit soft... I don't have photoshop anymore... I switched from pc to mac, and now I need to find CS2 or better.... I don't have that kind of cash right now!
