I have some complaints myself. This was taken maybe two days after xmas. Also two days after i first got my camera

for probably your first pic with this a new camera.....this is pretty good

the blue in her eyes is absolutely fantastic!! you should try a portrait of her. she seems like a willing subject and has a great smile and real "life" in her eyes.

the composition could be better. what i usually do when i am taking a head shot is to turn my cam sideways. it helps to reduce the amount of background so the viewer's attention is more on the subject. like this:
