While it's a rare sight in most areas and a greatly timed/captured moment by Ron, that's actually pretty typical for the Monarch butterflies. Do a Google Image search on "Monarch butterfly migration".

If I recall, they migrate from Mexico to Canada during certain seasons.

Yes, they summer in Canada & winter in Mexico.

During one day in Sept. 10, I noticed a lot of Monarchs about the yard & then in the evening, near last light, I saw them roosting together in two separate trees. I got a few shots then & got out early the next morning & got a few more as they were awakening & flying off.

We have lived here since 1974 & this was the only time I observed such an occurrence. Here is a shot as they were preparing to leave.

newbie minds want to know

My boy Naptime with an inquiring mind, that wants to know.

I shoot them with a 100mm 1:1 macro lens with a minimal focusing distance of .99, of a foot.
12 inches.

I was backed off this guy, so I reckon I shot him at about 14 inches, from the tip of the lens to the cameras sensor.
In other words the lens was in his face.

No wait!! I had a 25mm extension tube mounted too. So I was probably closer than 14 inches to him.
Maybe 8 or 9 inches.
And it's hard. It takes a hell of a lot of patience. This is one of the smaller moths or whatnot that doesn't just sit there.
When he senses movement, he's gone.
Anyone can do it.
