I tried comparing images of locust and grasshopper on google search but I can't find that distinct feature that separates one from another.

Here's a guy I brought home with me today. Trying to take some shots of him and let him go, but he won't stay put!

Grass hopper.

All of the Acrididae family are grasshoppers..... until they swarm into the huge flights of locusts that are so destructive to crops. Locust - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

if you have individuals that are not swarming... they are Grasshoppers. If you have hundreds of thousands all flying together eating everything in sight, they are locusts.

Some locals will name them locusts incorrectly... even in the non-swarming phase, especially in parts of the world where they tend to swarm regularly!

On the activity level and trying to get good shots... put them in the refrigerator for a couple of minutes. Cold slows down their metabolism, and makes them lethargic.

^ This . . . all (proper) locusts are grasshoppers, but not all grasshoppers are locusts. Cicadas are referred to as 17-year locusts, but they are not.

So how come the "Charlie's" are bug knowledgable? lol!

Put them in the fridge seems a little.....

The other option is to catch them early in the morning... they will be lethargic from the cold night that way. The Fridge thing is a handy little trick, when you are really trying to get some good shots (especially with a stinging or biting insect, that can do some damage!) Another trick is to catch the insects during the day, when they are active. Go out just after dusk, and put them on some plants you can easily find. 95% of the time they will still be there the next morning, if you get out early.

They are All Orthroptrans....... the photo you have.. appears to be a sp. of katydid.. Family Tettigoniidae.. or long legged Grasshopper...

Too many freakin Charlies!!
