What's new

Looking for a good entry level flash...

Being a camera-enthusiast, I would suggest that you save up for SB-600. You probably are thinking of getting the SB-400 as an impulsive choice. But we all know that 600 have better features that you’ll want long after you get your hands on SB-400. It’s always a good investment, and when at the time you plan to get the 600, i bet you would get a better deal. It’s better in terms of bouncing light, and a little more flexible.

SB-400 is one of those flash units I'm glad I bought, it's great for shots around the house and for some fill flash outdoors. SB-600, etc are much more versatile and powerful.

Just food for thought, look at the following alternatives to a Nikon branded flash (although, I don't think you can beat the performance of the Nikon Speedlights for less money...you can acquire good flashes for much less monkey, but don't kid yourself into thinking they are as powerful or feature-laden)...

1) Nissin i622
2) Sigma 530 or 610 ST
3) Sunpack PZ42X

All of these are SUPPOSED to be Nikon iTTL compatible, which you can't say about the Vivitar, although Vivitar makes some solid flashes for the money. I left out Metz, even though their products are awesome, simply because you can buy the Nikon Speedlights for the same or less money.

I haven't used the Nissin yet, but am hearing REALLY good things about it for the price...

From what I found on the Strobist site I am going to get the lumopro 160, which I thought was i/e ttl for $160 for a new one I figured I could not go wrong

the lumopro is a full manual strobe... no TTL.
