Well, rather than critique these images piece by piece, hows about I just give you some pointers as to how to improve your photos... I have recently been learning how to photograph children because I am now a proud father... With that said here's a few things I've picked up along the way
1.) Open a window and use natural light... It can work wonders and create soft lighting for you to work with
2.) A 50mm 1.8 lens is freakin sweet for portraits and relatively cheap (I think I paid $120 for mine)
3.) Keep the backgrounds simple and remember to watch out for items that may appear in your photos that are distracting
4.) Here comes a biggie... Focus on the eyes... You will be amazed at what this can do for your images
5.) This goes along with #4, use a low aperture (between 2.8 and 5.6) This will keep junior in focus and the background blurred. Remember, the closer you get to Junior, the Narrower your DoF gets, so if you shoot him at less than 3 feet away at 2.8, his eyes will be in focus but his ears will not.
6.) Dress them in solid color clothes or at least clothes that are not distracting. This will also help keep the emphasis on the child's face...
7.) This is not necessary, but if you can grab an off-camera flash on
ebay (usually less than or around 100$) it can work wonders. You can still shoot great pictures without it, but it can really energize your shots as well as make your lighting situation easier
Well, I'm no pro, in fact I'm pretty far from it... but these are just a few of the tips I have picked up while trying to learn how to photograph babies and children. Best of luck and keep posting results...
