Looking to buy first DSLR

You should already have some idea of the DOF for a given focal length/aperture combo. Even though, for me at least, it's more of an abstract visualization than a concrete "this many feet at f/8 and 120mm," I stopped wanting DOF preview all that much after a few days of just playing with shots.

When you're dealing with a subject and lighting that allow for it, play hard with DOF; re-take the shot at every aperture setting the camera allows and at several different focal lengths. Practice guessing the aperture by looking at the DOF. Look up the focal length in the EXIF data, or try to guess it as well. You probably won't get dead on every time, but you'll be surprised how quickly you get a general feel for it.

Besides, if the camera's fast enough and you're carrying enough memory, the shutter button makes for a nice preview of all your settings.

I'd go into a store and look at every consumer level DSLR there see which ones feel right and try out all their features. Once you've done this you'll be able to find your happy place.
