I thought an interchangeable zoom lens extens when zooming in and retrats when zooming out. At least that's the way the couple of zoom lenses that I have work.

Then how come the lens of Panasonic LX3, a point & shoot, extends to its logest at its shortest focal length and gradually retracts as it zooms in to a longer focal?

because it's weird? lol IDK

My 18-55mm when you get down into the wider focal ranges first contracts and then extends a little as you get to 18mm. Its all down to how the lens is constructed and the optical arrangement/formula.

Yeah, just chill out. If the images appear sharp, and not wonky in any way, you should be all set.

Yeah, my old 18-55mm did that, as does my 28-70 and my friends Canon 18-55, and 80-200. It's normal.
