hi all my question is..

i just bought a canon eos 3000 35mm film camera and was wondering about how to use my pentax lenses that are m42?

1.Are the adapters from M42 to Canon ef mount any good?

2.How would i go about using the camera ( all the lenses are manual)

3.which mode is best tv,av or full manual?

thank you for the support :)

I won't comment on the adapters, since I haven't used them - but...

You're going to want to use either Av or Manual. Tv won't work, as the camera would have to be able to change the aperture on the lens (which it won't be able to do).

In Av, set the aperture on the lens and the camera will take care of the shutter speed. The camera doesn't necessarily have to know what aperture it's set to - if it's in Av mode, it will always set the shutter speed to match whatever aperture the lens is set to (even if it doesn't know what that is - it will still meter the light coming through the lens).

The display on the camera will probably show 00 for the aperture (no matter which mode it's in) - just ignore that. Set the aperture on the lens, and use the meter in the camera.

In Manual mode, you'll just change the shutter speed to whatever it needs to be. Change the aperture on the lens.

The only real issue you should have is that the viewfinder will get darker as you stop down. And, depending on what kind of focusing screen is in the Canon body, focusing might be harder than you're used to...

The focus confirmation light should still work though.

To get a brighter viewfinder image, you might have to meter/focus/compose wide open, then stop down to the desired aperture and change the shutter speed accordingly.

thank you for the input :)

i know what you mean about dark viewfinders lol, my old pentax spotmatic did that when i stoped down, that had a microprism focusing system

so in av mode it will be semi automatic?

thanks again. :)

Yes, if you have the adapter it is semi-automatic in Av mode.

You can also get the AF-confirm adapters and they can be a great help if you're new to manual focus and have a dim viewfinder.

yeh the af conformation ones are exspensive :) plus im fine with manual as it is what i learnt with. cheers for the input :)

Old glass user...it doesn't look too dark through the viewfinder...but completely useless with the live-view screen on back...everything I've been shooting lately is usually a M42 mounted lens...

not really, if you buy in China it's about 10$ (shipping included). However, precision is not always good, so if you are fine with manual controls, go with them. I typically shoot in Av (and I use the LiveView when on tripod).
Almost any adapter is good (not much science inside), however there is some difference between those with pin flange, that maintain the aperture pin pressed, and those without. The latter might be a problem with auto only lenses, but not for preset and manual ones. Some Pentax lens however do not reach infinity with some flange adapter, because the pin is too out (not sure which lens, but my 200/4 is slightly sensible to this problem).

Yeh I have takumar 55mm and it is both auto and manual but my tamron 24-70mm & 70-200mm are both auto so I moded them so the pin is always down :) the adapter I ordered doesn't say it has a pin flange not a problem tho as my lends are now have manual aperture pins

thank you so much for the help

what do you mean by live view? If you mean the LCD then I don't have one on my canon :) 35mm ;)
