Just a couple of interesting shots (to me)...

C&C per req:

1. I'm not sure that I would have chosen to focus on the hames; with so many out of focus elements in the shot, I'm not sure that they provide enough interest. Perhaps if the horse's head was up higher?

2. I think there's something missing from this image; something for the cannon to be aimed at. This might have worked as sort of a 'lone sentinel' shot if you'd shot from a different position, but this down the barrel approach makes me want to see something in the water.

3. Nice composition; I like the distribution of elements in this image. Don't forget to level your work in post! Also consider using a polarizing filter (in all of these shots) to enhance sky/cloud contrast and reduce the reflection on the water.

Just my $00.02 worth - your mileage may vary.

Per request..

#1. I find the background really distracting. The subject matte itself seems a little plain as well. I think I see where you were going on this one, but personally all I see is the back of a horse's head.

#2. Like it much better. The top of the frame seems to be lost, with no real color to speak of, and the subject is really symmetrical, but it seems to work for me.

#3. Your lighthouse looks like its falling over, and your lake is in danger of draining. I would have tried to ge this one first thing in the morning, or at dusk rather than in the middle of the day, but sometimes you have to make due with the schedule presented.

All in all not bad. I probably couldn't have done any better.

First of all, great place to see :) went there in june and can't wait to go again.

#1 I like your idea but would like to see a longer path in front instead of the building. A vertical shot with some of the path being in focus leading your eyes to the end would probably work better IMO.

#2 I agree with tirediron, this view just ask for some boat to show up in front of the canon :) a different angle would probably be more interesting emphesizing the canon itself.

#3 I Love the composition! I would level your image a bit. I actually like the reflection of the light house in the water. Morning or sunset light would probably make this image awesome, but either way it's great shot.

Thanks for the help! I was just thinking "martian" when I looked at the house but my zoom was already ramped up from taking a picture of the coast. I agree with the #2 comments, need a focal point in the water (have another one with this, should post a followup). I haven't done any post work on #3 yet, so I wil be sure to level it. Sd for time of day, we were waiting for the ferry ride at 2pm. This place would look great at the early or late hours!

Thanks again!

Are you doing a tour of the UP? I think you would take great pics of the waterfalls up there

No tours, was there to simply go to the island for a couple of days with my family. One more shot of the canon, in a bit different perspective:

Very nice, brings backs good memories. My parents used to take us up there for summer vacation every year.

Great place to visit!

The bridge scares me... now you have me jonesing for a trip to the island. Did you get any fudge?

The bridge scares me...

I went over the bridge once in a 70 MPH snow and ice storm coming home from a hunting trip. There were pieces of ice coming up from the lake below and pelting the side of the truck. They closed the bridge about 10 minutes after we got across.

OMG that is crazy. Glad you made it across safely. What part of Michigan are you from? I am in GR. I've only drove across the bridge a few times, one time I was the driver and lets just say there was a lot of loud noise since I was practically on top of the center metal divider lol. I have a fear of bridges naturally, but that one is even more frightening with how it blows in the wind!

Ooops I see you're in Ohio. Quite a road trip there!

I moved to Cincinnati about 4 years ago but grew up about an hour north of Detroit. Have family in the U.P., used to go up there all the time.
