Lighting on the second picture is excellent--lovely head and shoulders shot. But to me, it's the first picture that is more memorable. The second to me (no insult intended) is textbook lighting. The first shot is more of an individual approach in which the backdrop (something we'd usually seek to minimalize through DoF or lighting) is actually highlighted and works as part of the appealing aspects of the composition. Excellent job on both--for different reasons.
