Medium Format Mirrorless?

Since the Sony mirrorless cameras has gotten so small, have they thought of a medium format mirrorless? This makes the sensor 1 time larger but the camera size would be similar to current full frame DSLRs.

The Leica S2 is the closest to what you describe. Larger than standard 35mm frame in a body roughly the size of professional DSLR bodies. Mirrorless is one of those technologies that currently appeals to the consumer rather than professionals.... it focus is compactness rather than performance. Things are always changing. Only time will tell.

Because of the modular nature of MF digital, these cameras already exist. The Alpa is mirrorless, for example.

Very good point Helen (with the exception of the S2). I wish that other companies would follow suite .. similar to the Digital module R for the R-Leica body. So one can update the sensor or perhaps invite third party modules. Probably wouldn't be cost effective.

What if Nikon, Canon or Sony started producing it?

Sony would do it so they could claim to be the first to bring MF to the mainstream.

It would be small, affordable, 100 megapixel, with a chrome plated and nearly unusable interface. There will only be 2 mediocre zoom lenses available for it. :greenpbl:


In all seriousness though, I think with the current lenses available from the major players, and the amount that photographers have invested in those lens systems, it would be a hard sell to get people to switch, even if they could make amazing bodies that were affordable. I do see APS-C eventually getting phased out as technology improves however. I think the constant decrease in cost and improvement in performance in sensor technology will result in more people shooting full frame, and full frame sensors getting into smaller and smaller bodies.
