The lack of rain has caused dangerous drops in the water level in the river. It's caused significant problems for elevators trying to load barges with restrictions on loading and bottlenecks in the narrow channel.

From Cape Girardeau, MO at the flood gates, gives you an idea of how low the water is. Looking south.

Considering that wall is sometimes necessary to hold the water back, that's pretty low water on the Mississippi.

It's been just under a foot from the top. The rocks in the first couple shots would normally be underwater.

Hope you don't mind -- for reference here's that wall with the river running a little high but no near flood stage.

Yup the water is usually at or just below the shelf on the right in the first photo. A side note, they're renovating the old buildings on the other side creating condos on the upper floors. Just to the north are a mixture of old and new condos, with views over flood wall. They're selling them at 500k and up.

@Jeff15 A large swath of the Midwest and SE are in drought. They just moved us from minimal to moderate.

All your rain is here. Maybe I will get some ploy bags and post it to you

Nice shots.
