Photos NOT OK to edit
Founded in 1793 on the banks of the Mississippi, Cape Girardeau, MO's economic and social development has risen and fallen with the mighty river. All along the river levees have gone up to try and contain the mighty beast. So it was with Cape as the locals call it. After devastating floods in the downtown, the floodwall was constructed in 1957. I've seen photos of the flood waters within 4' of the top, but it's always held.

Cape has a long history as a port where paddlewheelers once docked.

While a lifesaver, having a big ugly wall can be a downer as well, so might as well dress it up.

Maybe it's the serenity of watching the thousands of thousands of gallons of water flowing by, or maybe it's the history, but you can always find people relaxing and walking along the river.

Yup. I didn't have a lot of time to shoot, by the time we made the rounds of family. I wish I'd had time to do a pano of the wall

Lol. I didn't get to the casino down the street either. I really need to work on priorities!

Really like the downtown shots. Nice when you can "feel" the history.

Looks like a nice and quaint town.

The downtown is somewhat deceptive. It was once the center of activity but now the activity has moved more toward the Interstate. Thanks to its location, it has become a major center of retail and health care.

Really like the downtown shots. Nice when you can "feel" the history.

When the retail moved out they attempted to make it into a destination spot of entertainment and eclectic shops. They've struggled with the concept, as there are buildings still in need of repair and tenants. I think they thought the Casino 3 blocks north would draw traffic, but it hasn't panned out. There's a move on now to build new and remodel existing buildings into high end condos.

Interesting set, I like the Coke ad

Original ad, the building houses the Port Cape Girardeau, a decent restaurant. Sadly the Royal N Orleans, built in 1806, a Cape classic for fine dinning (suit & tie required for entry) has gone by the wayside. I noticed the building had been remodeled and a splashy new "hip" restaurant had opened, but I'm not sure it will live up to the genteel atmosphere that the N'Orleans exuded.

All these shots are very, very tastefully framed. Interesting, too. Glad you shared them.

Nice set of photos, makes me wish I would have stopped when I traveled through that area a couple of years ago. Ate at Lambert's in Sikeston, so I was close by.

@zulu42 thank you for looking and commenting

@fishing4sanity Lamberts is the iconic restaurant of the midwest. Home of the throwed rolls and the pass arounds. We always skip breakfast, go for a late lunch and eat left overs for lunch the next day.

What a great and colourful set, bet that was scary to see the water so high against the wall in the #1 shot also really like the Downtown shots.
