Mockingbird Sun--Nikon's 85mm is Impressive!

Hey!
Mockingbird Sun played here on campus this evening... and I of course brought my camera along and shot a few hundred frames. I will say that the Nikon 85mm 1.8G impresses me time and time again--it's SOOO useful in lowlight, and a great focal length on the crop body. Here's two of my favorites from tonight.

Great Pics DBJ. Have to agree with you wholeheartedly, I haven't had my 85 mm for long but every time I use it the darn thing delivers like a charm. But since I have taken it out twice now i think I am now qualified to give a full fledged review of the lens, at least according to Derrel. So here goes.

But really, it's just that good. Sharpness at f2.2 is phenomenal (I'm pretty sure that's what these were at). It's just a joy to use. And I'm glad you like the photos! With every shoot I feel myself improving little by little.

It **is** an amazing performer for a lens priced at less than four thousand dollars. It's just insane how razor-sharp this lens is! It's right up there with the 200 f/2 VR and other exotics. And yeah, it's pretty damned good at f/2.2.

Lol. Seriously though it is just a phenomenal lens. Probably the best price vrs performance buy I've ever made, in fact so much so that I don't even object to the fact that I had to buy it new because I couldn't find a used one. But on the upside I managed to get the $100 rebate, and honestly it would have been well worth it even without the rebate.

I should also add that you are part of the reason I decided to buy one. I used my 50mm 1.8D last night right after the 85... wow. It was useless in comparison. I think I'll have to add a 50mm 1.8G to my bag as well.

I really like the 50 mm 1.8 G - it's also a very sharp, fast focusing lens that does great in lowlight. I'm seriously considering adding the 35 mm as well, I've found I really like shooting with primes when I can, they really do an excellent job.

I have the 50 1.8g. No complaints really. I've never had any issues and with a slight AF fine tune, it's pretty sharp wide open.
