So I am admittedly new to this but why do Canon and Nikon number their camera models the way they do?

It is freaking confusing.

70D, 7D, D90, D80, D300, D7000, etc....

Someone in their marketing department needs to be fired.

That is all.

Joe

This observation came up because I am currently looking for my first real dslr camera. I am currently borrowing my Uncle's GH1. I found a Nikon D80 with a 50mm f/1.8 on CL for 450.

What do you guys think about that price...Is it fair?

Thanks

Canon is nice and easy:
Beginner range lower part xxxxD (eg 1100D)
Beginner range upper part xxxD (eg 600D)
Mid range lower part xxD (60D - note 50D and previous are all upper mid range, the 60D and 7D were the start of the midrange split)
Mid range upper part xd (7D and 5DMII - note 7D is crop sensor whilst the 5D line is fullframe (35mm))
Top range 1D (split into 1.3 crop and fullframe bodies)

Nikon on the other hand I've no idea

just do your research. google is your friend here. There are many sites that have comprehensive reviews of lens and motor and other types of equipment.

i use this one a lot.

Your right...that is nice and easy.....(that's sarcasm).

really I'm just ranting a little bit...just like anything else once you get the hang of it, its not so bad.

I offered 300 for the D80. The guy countered 350.00.

Please respond if you have an opinion as I'd like to respond to this guy.

Thanks again.

I can't say as I'm not in the US market; best thing would be to look at completed listings on ebay for similar products/deals to give you some reference point (chances are you'll have to search for lens and body differently and then combine the prices)

Price seems fair. i recently went through it with a D80 and lens off CL too. The best way I found to gauge market value today is bounce each of ebay prices.

^^^ you beat me to it

Agreed to price is $300.00. I'm on the fence.

Buy this or maybe buy my uncles GH1 or save and buy something better like a 7000 or a 60D?

I don't really care much about video if that helps.

It depends on the condition of the camera, lens and things like the total shutter count, if the original box, user's manual, a Nikon battery, charger, cables, memory card, etc are included or not.
If you look in my siggy I have a link to a low shutter count D300 for sale.
