Tried this in low light condition:

On the first one, I would have put a reflector on the ground (or preferably elevated a few feet) to my right, pointing towards her face. The hat she's wearing shades her face a lot. Some additional light there would have done wonders for this shot. It's fairly drab as it is.

I like the kid's expression on the 2nd photo, and the black and white looks good there. Only major gripe is the junk in the background, and that his head is cut off at the top. This one might have worked better in portrait.
