So, after seeing @zombiesniper posts with the Plovers ... we decided to see them for ourselves.

Here is some information about them.

We have known about the return of the Piping Plovers to Ontario for a while. It is great to hear their return to our Province. After WWII the last known nesting pair was recorded in 1977. In 1986 they were officially listed as extirpated ... then in 2007 the first nest was found.

The Piping Plover is currently a protected species here ... and we mean it. Just recently our Ministry of Natural Resources and Forests just laid charges again a town that was grooming the beach and caused destruction of Plover habitat.

We went to Wasaga Beach (where Trevor was) to see them. Wasaga has done a great job at shielding the nesting areas. Wasaga Beach is one of (or probably the most) popular summer beaching areas in Ontario (we remember going to the Beach every summer when we were younger), so the 14km's of sandy beach tends to be packed full of mostly naked (and some completely) people during the warm season. There are two very large fenced off areas along Beach 1 going from the boardwalk all the way down to the water, to keep people out of the habitat, and also they have a large wired cage enclosing each of the nests to ensure they have a protected shelter from predatory animals.

So we got there and some very large and loud birds were already flying about.

The pilots/planes were practicing for the Heroes Festival that was going to run over the weekend. We got a mini-airshow, and the Plovers did not seem distressed by them either.

... anyway, back to the Plovers ... Staring into the large fenced area you cannot see the Plovers ... then you see something really really tiny moving/running across the sand ...

they also have a habit of turning suddenly

Excellent images.

I see you were up for the Hero's weekend that just passed. It must have been a mad house with the bike rally, car shows and exhibits.

Thanks.
We went up on Friday ... so we caught them preparing for the weekend, and saw the cars driving in.

FYI: For anyone deciding to go see them, there are Plover Guardians there to provide visitor information (and keep an eye on those little buggers).

Very cool set and good info.
