Stepped out to smoke this afternoon, looked over the fence to see an Osprey perched on the fence across the river from my home. Having trouble getting the D7000 to focus where I want it to.

A few more of the Osprey, didn't have any shots that where in focus of the bird taking flight.

Very cool! What a majestic bird!

Try using a one point focus mode. Works wonders and I am also shooting a D7000. Quit smoking!

What lens are you shooting with?

AF-S Nikkor 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6, setting where 300mm - f/5.6 - 1/800 sec - ISO 800. Perhaps a smaller aperture allowing greater depth of field would help with subject being in focus.
