The_Traveler. I agree. I'm trying to think back to that day, and for some reason I'm thinking she wasn't in the shade because the "barn" only had 3 sides, and the sun was shinning into it when I was taking the photo of my other daughter. Ugh, I wish I could remember.

If you look at the picture, it doesn't look like there is any directional light.
The back of her head might be in the sun but her face is not.
What makes for good portraits is soft, even directional light that illuminates without harshness.
