My first pictures

I can't even believe the guy asked for help and some of you are going to quarrel over the words he used. Sheesh. Who cares what he calls them and if he gets paid or not, the fact is he just asked for some help with these pictures.

I went through a bunch of tutorials on ISO, Shutter speed and aperture on the nikon website and through a couple other photography forum websites that were really helpful - take the time to go through some and it will help you alot. Good Luck and most importantly just keep taking pictures.

"being a professional has nothing to do with getting paid."

It has everything to do with getting paid. A Profesional is someone who gets paid for what they do. If you drive for a living you're a professional Driver, if you play sport for a living you're a professional Sportsman. The dictionary definition is this :-
following an occupation as a means of livelihood or for gain: a professional builder.

If you don't get paid for you're work you're an amatuer.

"but with practice can become a professional paid or not"

How can you be an unpaid professional??? Its a contradiction in terms. A Professional gets paid, an Amatuer doesn't. Its as simple as that.

you should include the entire definition. i looked it up too. pay is not a requirement, only a part.

1. a. Of, relating to, engaged in, or suitable for a profession: lawyers, doctors, and other professional people.
b. Conforming to the standards of a profession: professional behavior.

2. Engaging in a given activity as a source of livelihood or as a career: a professional writer.
3. Performed by persons receiving pay: professional football.
4. Having or showing great skill; expert: a professional repair job.
n. 1. A person following a profession, especially a learned profession.
2. One who earns a living in a given or implied occupation: hired a professional to decorate the house.
3. A skilled practitioner; an expert.

In the context we are talking in it comes down to whether you get paid or not. You couldn't say "i'm a professional photographer" if you didn't get paid. The same as someone who plays sport for fun couldn't claim to be a professional sportsman. You could claim that "my photo's are of a professional standard" but that would NOT make you a professional.

The OP could have said "these are my first attempt at professional standard pictures" but not that "these are my first attempt at professional pictures" unless he really believed he could sell them.

It seemed pretty clear that he meant "professional standard" based on the surrounding questions and information, and you're blowing it all completely out of proportion for no reason at all except to show that you can be some kind of grammar nazi.

Is a person a professional from the moment they sell their first photo on, or is it only for that moment and that photo, then they're an amateur again?

Does it matter how much it sells for?

Suppose they could charge top dollar but they're independently wealthy and shoot for the love of it, while their work graces everything from magazine covers to major ad campaigns to art galleries and museums? Still call them amateur?

What's it all to you?

Or maybe he simply mis-spoke? :meh:

To the OP, Keep snapping away! Take some classes, and read some books....

Also, for the love of God man, try to keep the pictures of illegal exploits posted to a public forum at a minimum. That's just begging for issues.

"Suppose they could charge top dollar but they're independently wealthy and shoot for the love of it, while their work graces everything from magazine covers to major ad campaigns to art galleries and museums? Still call them amateur?"

Yes of course they'd be an Amateur if they weren't getting paid for. It doesn't matter how good your pics are, if you're not getting paid for them then you're an amateur.

An example, there are certain sports that aren't popular enough to warrant being paid to do it. Even the very best in the world at these sports are amateur. Its not a slight on their talent, its simply that they do not get paid to do it and probably have other jobs.

Saying someone is a professional photography implies one thing, that they are paid to takes photo's and that is how they make their living. They may be rubbish but if they are making a living from it then they are a professional.

You ignored my other questions, and you ignored the rest of the dictionary's definitions.

"Saying someone is a professional photography..." makes no sense. How can a person be a "professional photography"? A person could be a professional photographer, but that's not what you wrote, so it couldn't be what you meant. Let's blow this all out of proportion too, while we're at it, in order to show that you don't know what you're talking about. Sound good?

What question would that be?

I'm not having a go at the OP, infact i did say some of the comments were too harsh. The fact is whether you are a professional or not isn't subjective. Its very simple, if you get paid you are a professional. If you don't get paid you're an amateur. Its got nothing to do with ability. You could say "he's done a professional job" but that wouldn't make him a professional. Would you call a sportsman who didn't get paid for playing his sport a professional???

Maybe theres a language issue here, but in the UK someone who doesn't get paid for what they do is an amatuer and that is implied with no slight on their ability, effort ect. Likewise a professional is someone who gets paid for what they do, again it implies nothing but the fact that they get paid for what they do. We also have the term semi-professional which would imply they get paid but not enough to make a living from it, ie they have a another/main job.
