I know more than most of the BestBuy people. A few who received a local Photography degree (I've spoken to a few of them) and are starting out in life .. single, mid 20s.
A few do weddings, etc. but I haven't seen their work. So they have the knowledge and experience.

The local camera stores the employees are much older and I assume have much more experience.

Overall though both Bestbuy and the local camera store probably cater more towards the entry to mid tier people, though rich populace. One camera store is in the ritzy part of town where seeing Jaguar's, Porsche's and Mercedes is passé ... interspersed among the Maserati's, Lamborghini's, Ferrari's, Bentley's and a few Bugatti's.

WHy do so many people not realize that Best Buiy is one of the largest photo/video/computer/electronics retail chains in the entire world?

My favorite Best Buy has a big Nikon,Canon, and Sony section, and about 100 compact digital cameras on display; it might help that mine is the closest one next to the Interstate 205 freeway, so it serves the Portland area AND the SW Washington area; Oregon has NO sales tax for any buyer (regardless of home state) of any thing, so we have a substantial number of people coming across the Columbia River on the bridge to beat the Washington State sales tax by buying high-dollar items in tax-free Oregon. Portland International Airport is also ony a few miles away, so they keep the store well-stocked, and international; and interstate customers are pretty common.

Probably because they are like the Best Buy's in my location. They have very limited in stock camera gear and it is virtually all consumer grade stuff. If you want any kind of selection you have to order from them on line and they don't have the online stock nor the online reputation of a B&H, Adorama etc.

Last time I went in my local area Best Buy, they only had Canon DSLR highest was a T6i No Nikons and one model Sony A6000.

they're not exactly paid a large amount of $$
At my BB they also teach newbie classes and work weekends all the time.
They know their "stuff" as long as you are a newbie to low level intermediate.
after that it's above their pay grade.

Who give a s*** if the staff "know anything"...we're there to buy stuff at good prices-- with one of the most easy-peasy, full money-back guarantees in the USA...buyers already know danged near everything about the stuff they want, due to the ease and ready availability of internet reviews and on-line research sites.

Walk in, buy it, use it, try it,. if you don't like it you have 30 days to return it. Why buy from New York (cough! cough! class action lawsuits!) when you can buy locally, all across the North American continent, and in Europe?

Best Buy does have a excellent return policy, better then the local camera shop which is a short 15 days. I purchased extended warranty's to and actually had to use it once with a no hassle pick out another and out the door I went with a new microwave. If I go to Best Buy to buy something,I already done my reading all the reviews, did all the side by side comparisons. As far as knowledge goes, most are young adults barley old enough to drive, probably not old enough to drink. knowledge comes with time and experience and though some will be pretty savy and others not so much, who cares.

All the cameras are shoved into a corner with dust on them and lot of them are broke and have pieces hanging of them. There is no lens displays, they are just in their boxes under the camera display in an unordered fashion. What a joke.

Thats sounds like some poor management to me.
